Salon Towel Talk with ProTexfeaturing ProTex

Whether you’re taking care of your clients' hair, skin or nails, chances are you’re often reaching for a towel. But just like each service is different, salon towels come in a wide variety of sizes, styles, colors and materials, and each one is suited to a different purpose. With so many specialized options available - and a finite amount of shelf space - it can be tricky to decide which combination of salon towel types to keep on hand. We sat down with Gretchen Giardina, VP of Operations at ProTex, to talk about everything towels.
We know that Partex was rebranded to ProTex. Can you tell us what motivated the change?
Our brand name now represents what our focus has always been; offering quality salon towels to the professional end user. Hence, ProTex - Professional Textiles. All other aspects of our company are the same. Same great people, same quality product, same everything. Just a brand name change and updated artwork, which we love and hope you do too!
First things first: size. What sizes does ProTex offer, and why does towel size matter?
We currently produce and stock towels ranging from 12” x 12” (washcloth) to 24” x 50” (large bath towel). The salon towel size comes into play when considering the use case. For example: a washcloth is the perfect size for manicures, hot shave treatments and all-purpose cleaning. A 16” x 26” to 16” x 29” towel is ideal for so many services and treatments in a hair salon, nail salon and spa - shampoo, color, pedicure, manicure, facials…the list goes on.
How about material? How are these salon towels made?
Our towels are made of 100% first quality premium cotton. We offer towels of varying yarn types and counts that offer different features and benefits to meet the preferences of salon professionals.
Why is it important to wash new salon towels before using them?
It is important and necessary to wash and dry your towels at least once (if not twice!) before use. After you wash and dry your salon towels they will be fluffier, softer and more absorbent. All suggested washing instructions are listed on the towel label and/or insert.
Some people are surprised by towel shrinkage, but it’s a common occurrence and not something to worry about, right?
You are correct. Salon towels made from 100% cotton will shrink a bit after the first wash and dry. This is normal for all cotton towels. During our production process the towels are laundered in order to reduce the shrinkage seen after the first wash.
When would a thick, fluffy towel make more sense than a thinner towel? Or vice versa?
Many times this comes down to the preference of the salon professional. A lighter-weight salon towel takes less time and energy to wash and dry, and is not quite as bulky around the client’s neck. A medium to heavy-weight salon towel is a thicker, fluffier towel that is more absorbent and has a longer useful lifespan.
Can you break down some of the special attributes and features of ProTex towels?
ProTex towels offer several features that help increase the towels’ durability and overall quality.
- ProTex Bleach Guard items are resistant to bleach, acetone, peroxide, hair dyes and other salon chemicals. This feature ensures no bleach stains!
- Advanced hemming which increases the towel’s durability and useful life.
- Rich, vibrant colors that will hold up wash after wash.
- Many of our salon towels are made of 100% ring-spun cotton. This premium cotton offers a more vibrant look and a softer, fluffier feel.
These are just some of the features and benefits of ProTex Towels. Check out each towel listing at Marlo Beauty Supply for more info regarding a specific towel!
ProTex CLIPPRO Bleach Guard Towels come in a variety of colors that are resistant to bleach, acetone, perm solutions, hair color and other chemicals!
How often should you replace your towels?
This is a tough question to answer for a few reasons. Many factors that play into the longevity of a towel can vary from salon to salon. How many times the towels are laundered in a day, how often they’re being laundered (high heat, bleach, etc.), what types of chemicals the towels come into contact with and the professional’s preferences all determine the useful life of the towel.
In typical use, with the ProTex towel washed and dried once a day following care instructions:
- ProTex Bleach Guard Legacy: 6 to 8 months
- ProTex Bleach Guard CutPRO: 8 to 10 months
- ProTex Bleach Guard StylePRO: 10 to 12 months
