Entering BEA This Year? Read This First!
Are you feeling inspired to enter the Beauty Envision Awards this year? We can’t wait to see what you create! Before you get to work finding your inspiration, creating your masterpiece and officially uploading your entry on Instagram, Akela Douglass, 2020 BEA Natural Texture Artist of the Year, has some words of wisdom for you.
We sat down (virtually, of course) with Akela to talk inspiration, the process for creating her winning look and her advice for stylists entering the Natural Texture category in 2021.
P.S. Marlo Beauty Supply is proud to support the 2021 Natural Texture category, sponsored by Clairol Professional! Thinking about entering? Grab all the products you’ll need here!
Marlo Beauty: What inspired you to enter BEA last year?
Akela: They added the Natural Texture category!
Marlo Beauty: What was the inspiration for this look?
Akela: I was first inspired by ancient African hairstyles, particularly the Fulani tribe. The “hairfan” came together through trial and error. Luckily I had lots of time to work on it because we had just gone into Covid lockdown!

Marlo Beauty: Did you have experience with industry award shows before?
Akela: I had entered before but never made it to the semi-finals. I was surprised to learn that someone with limited experience can actually do well in hair competitions!
Akela created the winning look in her kitchen! One of her roommates was the model, and another roommate did the makeup.
Marlo Beauty: What are three tips you would give a stylist entering the texture category?
Akela: 1. Shape is key. 2. Create a full look (makeup, wardrobe, etc.). 3. Invest in a great photographer.
One thing Akela says you should definitely invest in? A skilled photographer.
Marlo Beauty: What skills do you think you need to win the texture category?
Akela: You need to have a very clear vision. Also a clean technique, neat partings and a purposeful shape. Do everything with intention.
Marlo Beauty: What were some unexpected benefits that followed your win?
Akela: Texture being spotlighted on such a large platform. I’ve already taught several texture-focused classes that weren’t part of Wella’s core education before.

Marlo Beauty: What advice do you have for other stylists entering BEA this year?
Akela: Have a plan, but don’t beat yourself up if your exact plan doesn’t work. Keep playing, and it will eventually come together.
1. All entry work must be created by you within the last 12 months and posted on Instagram between 1/15/2021 and 5/20/2021.
