MEET FREDERIC FEKKAI - A PIONEER OF PROFESSIONAL HAIR CARE
Chances are you've heard the name Frédéric Fekkai, seen his work on red carpets or in magazines and maybe even spotted him on the big screen (Frédéric makes cameos in both Legally Blonde and Zoolander!). This iconic celebrity hairstylist was trained in Paris and set NYC on fire with the introduction of his chic French hairstyles full of movement, hand painted balayage techniques and celebration of each individual’s beauty. His disruptive techniques quickly captured the hearts of NYC elite clients as well as red carpet fashion designers, beauty editors, supermodels and celebrities. Just a few years after coming to the US (with only $600), he was invited to open his first salon atop Bergdorf Goodman in New York City in 1989. From there, he went on to create the prestige hair care category with the launch of his FEKKAI hair care line in 1995 - his inspiration for which was hearing the wants and needs from time spent with his clients in his salon.
"I would see them taking excellent care of their skin with facial treatments and investing in complex skincare with active anti-aging and protective ingredients, and I wondered why they didn't invest the same in products for their hair- their color was coming back to me looking completely different! And the reason was that it didn't exist!" says Frédéric.
Determined to ensure the FEKKAI haircare product line met the same standards seen in high-end skincare, Frédéric set out to do what no one else was doing at the time. "My customer was coming to me to look their best, so I knew they would be receptive to haircare delivering the same type of experience and results as their skincare. The next step was to find dermatological labs where I could create those products," he says.
At FEKKAI, all products are created from scratch. "I begin with what I want the product to do for the hair, then research the best ingredients to achieve that. Each product is a unique formula."
After building the FEKKAI brand into an industry leader and selling it to Procter & Gamble, he re-acquired it in 2018 with a new mission: to prove that clean formulations do not have to compromise on performance.
Today he is pushing the boundaries of haircare and styling with formulations that use only the cleanest ingredients, sustainable packaging and cutting-edge innovation. "Being green became important to me over a decade ago, and since then, I've committed to living a more sustainable life both personally and professionally,” Frédéric shares. “A natural next step was to take my passion for the environment and make an impact on the beauty industry."
