Step by Step: Men’s Texture Servicefeaturing Tressa

Perms: what used to be associated with the ‘80s and the phrase “the bigger the better” are getting an update - a new generation is asking their stylists for a wavy perm for men, which combines the relaxed charm of loose curls with the structured appeal of a classic perm. This new era of permanent waves for men took over social media, and continues to gain popularity in the salon. Achieving the perfect men’s wavy perm demands expertise, so we asked Tressa Director of Education Judi Isom for her tips on how to master the look. Grab your styling tools, and let’s perm, baby perm!

Step-by-Step: Men’s Texture Service
Step 1: Always perform a sink or swim test before any texture service! If the hair floats, this indicates healthy porosity, and your client can receive a wavy perm. If the hair sinks, there needs to be some type of chemical intervention before you can proceed with the service.
Step 2: Judi also recommends you perform an IT test, which measures the internal tension of hair. Hold a strand of hair between your fingers, and slowly draw your fingers together. When the hair forms a loop, that tells you the size of the rod you should use. Here, Judi is using white rods mixed with purple rods for looser waves.
Step 3: Pretreat with Tressa Remove All Plus to deep clean and get rid of any product build-up.
Step 4: For this wavy perm service, Judi used a double flat wrap or bookend paper placement, placing the rods all along the head in sections, starting at the crown and working her way down, then moving onto either side. She finished in the crown.
Step 5: Apply Tressa Full Cycle wave solution generously to each rod and wrap in cotton to prevent solution from bleeding. Judi processed with dryer heat for 20 minutes. Note: Full Cycle must be processed under warm dryer heat.
Step 6: Rinse for 10 minutes with hot water, focusing on the top area first.
Step 7: Towel-blot until the papers are no longer transparent and air neutralize for 5 to 10 minutes.
Step 8: Apply Tressa Neutralizer all over and process for 5 to 10 minutes, then drop the rods and work the neutralizer through with your fingers. Rinse and apply Tressa Clarifying Rinse.
Step 9: Style with Tressa Supplex styling lotion and a diffuser.
Wavy perms for men aren’t just a trend, they’re a service that’s here to stay. The permanent wave has become a permanent fixture in salons, and mastering the style will open up your business to new clientele! Get everything you need to get wavy with Tressa at marlobeauty.com!
