How to Build Your Clientele as a New Hairstylist
Starting out as a hairstylist is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming when you’re trying to grow your client base and fill your chair consistently.
Where do you begin? How can you attract new clients and keep them coming back?
Below, we’re sharing practical strategies that have helped real stylists attract new clients, build strong relationships and create loyal clientele early in their careers. From building a portfolio on social media to developing the skill of holding meaningful connections, these tips are designed to help you grow with intention.
Here are nine tried and true tips that have helped real stylists attract and retain clients for years of repeat business.
1. Get Active on Social Media
One of the easiest (and most effective) ways to get your name out there is through social media. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok are perfect for hairstylists because they’re visual, and people love seeing transformations. Here’s what you can do:
- Post Your Work Regularly: Share before and after photos of your clients’ hair. People love seeing how a fresh cut or color can completely change someone’s look. Detroit-based stylist Jessica Phillips (@jessicaphillips_hair) reminds us “Social media is your portfolio.” Use it to showcase your skills and attract clients who resonate with your style.
- Show Your Personality: Let people see what it’s like to be in your chair. Post videos of you chatting with clients, styling hair or recommending your favorite products.
- Tag Clients: Whenever you post a client’s hair transformation, make sure to tag them and encourage them to share it. This gets your work in front of their friends and followers, opening the door for more referrals! Some stylists even use Instagram’s Collab feature to collaborate with clients and reach an even wider audience.
2. Ask for Referrals
Happy clients are your best advertisement, and a simple referral can go a long way.
- Encourage Word of Mouth: After a great appointment, if the vibe feels right, don’t be afraid to hit them with a casual “Tell your friends!”
- Send a Personal Follow-Up: After an appointment, send a quick thank you message. Something like, “Thanks for coming in today!” or “Nice to meet you!” Keep it sincere and avoid any further sales pitches - this lets them know you appreciate them and keeps you top of mind.
- Set Up a Referral Program: Orlando-based stylist Ricardo Santiago (@stylistricardosantiago) said when he was first starting out, he created a referral program to incentivize his clients. “I wouldn't necessarily give a discount but it would be a free service that didn't cost me anything,” he shares. “For every three referrals a client would send, I would offer a complimentary cut and style with any color service. It helped me grow fast locally!”
3. Build Strong Client Relationships
As you know, in the beauty industry, it’s not just about the service, it’s about the experience. Building real connections with your clients can turn a first-time visitor into a loyal regular.
- Personal Touches Matter: Jessica's commitment to remembering personal details about her clients sets her apart. “I have a little card for each of my clients that has their hair history, formula and the products that they like,” she explains. “And then on the back I'll write personal things like their kid's name or what they had going on in their life the last time that I saw them. Then when I see them next I can say, ‘Hey, how was the wedding?’ or ‘How was your trip?’” This attention to detail helps build strong connections.
- Create a Safe Space: Building a trusting relationship is important to Jessica, and she makes that clear from the start. “I tell my clients the very first time I meet them: ‘You can come here in sweatpants, no makeup, crying, laughing… this is a safe space.’” Jessica also encourages open communication during services, ensuring clients feel comfortable voicing their thoughts. “A major line I'll use is, ‘Hey, we're finishing up, and I'm going to blow dry this section of your hair. Let's look at it together, and I want you to feel comfortable letting me know if there's anything you don’t love.’ I tell them ‘You can’t hurt my feelings. I’m here for you.’ And, especially for a first-time client, that really gains their trust.”
4. Specialize in Something
Want to stand out? Find a niche! Specializing in a particular service or style can help you become the go-to person for that look in your area. Then, promote your specialty: talk about it on social media, in conversations with clients and in marketing materials. You want people to immediately think of you when they need that particular service.
5. Collaborate with Local Businesses
Team up with local businesses to expand your reach. Partnerships can be a great way to get in front of new clients without spending a dime.
- Cross-Promotion: Partner with local makeup artists, photographers or boutiques. You can do the hair for a photoshoot, and they can promote your work. You can also cross promote with neighborhood businesses. For example, Jessica previously partnered with a local bedding company. “We talked about the benefits of silk pillowcases for extensions, lash extensions and skin,” she explains. “We decided to collab on a post and see how we can play into each other’s audiences and enhance each other’s visibility and client reach!”
Ricardo has partnered with his local gym and church in the past. “At church, I volunteer for free back to school haircuts, and that has helped with local exposure. At my local OrangeTheory, I’ve sponsored free services for winners of transformation challenges. I'll take care of the winner for free but I always get at least 7 to 10 new clients from each sponsorship!” - Leave Your Business Cards: Ask if you can leave some business cards at nearby businesses that attract your target clients. It’s an easy way to get your name in front of new faces.
6. Ask for Reviews
Online reviews are incredibly important for potential clients, who want to see what other people are saying before they commit to a new stylist.
- Encourage Clients to Leave Reviews: “I’ll tell my clients: ‘If you enjoyed your experience and want to leave a review, I’m going to send you a link to my Google Business page,’” says Jessica. This proactive approach can significantly increase the number of positive reviews you receive. “You’d be surprised by how effective simply asking people to write the review is. They're happy to do it for you!”
- Share Testimonials: When clients leave positive reviews, post them on your social media or website. Letting people see how happy others are with your work builds trust and credibility.
7. Create a Memorable Client Experience
The more memorable the experience, the more likely your clients are to return and tell others about you.
- Pamper Your Clients: Little touches like offering a drink or giving a great scalp massage can make the difference between a good appointment and a great one. “The biggest selling point is the scalp massage,” says Ricardo. “[My clients] all come back for the scalp massage, so don't short them on that!
- Make it Personal: Ricardo takes “memorable client experience” to the next level, letting his clients select the music during their appointment, choose what to watch on TV and offering a house made cocktail or to pick up food from nearby restaurants while they process!
- Don't Rush: Give each client your full attention and make them feel like they’re your priority. This level of care can create lasting loyalty.
8. Keep Learning
Staying on top of trends and new techniques is key to keeping your clients happy and coming back.
- Stay Educated: Take courses, attend workshops and follow the latest trends. Clients love stylists who are continuously learning and bringing fresh ideas to their appointments. “I like to focus on foundation courses versus techniques,” shares Ricardo. “Offering solid, foundational skills has helped create a reputation as someone who delivers consistent and excellent results which translates to referrals and returns!”
- Connect With Like-Minded Artists: “Finding artists you connect with - those who post content that resonates with you - is important,” Jessica says. Surrounding yourself with inspiring peers not only fuels creativity but also opens up opportunities for collaboration and growth.
9. Assess Your Strategies
To ensure your social media efforts are effective, regularly assess how your strategies are performing.
- Analyze Client Retention: Pay attention to how many of your clients return for repeat services. This is a crucial indicator of your success in building relationships.
- Review Insights: Utilize analytics tools to check who your social media posts are reaching and the engagement they are generating. This data can inform future content strategies. “It’s so important to treat social media as a second job,” says Jessica. “I’m always checking my engagement and looking at my insights to ensure that my posts and content are reaching people in my area who I can service.”
Building a solid client base as a new stylist takes time, but by focusing on creating a memorable experience, building strong relationships and getting active on social media, you can attract loyal clients who will come back again and again.
Remember, it’s all about making people feel good during their experience! Follow these tips, stay consistent and your client list will grow in no time!
