Step-by-Step: Kenny Duncan’s Molded Wave Brush Cutfeaturing Andis
Andis tools are excellent on their own, but using them together can unlock techniques that will take your barbering work to new heights. Below, Kenny Duncan (@kduncangrooming) - Lead Educator at Andis and celebrity barber - shows you how to create a signature Molded Wave Brush Cut using a combination of Andis barber tools.
Step-by-Step: Kenny Duncan’s Molded Wave Brush Cut
1. Use the Andis GTX-EXO Trimmer to create a bald sub-section in the nape area.
2. Repeat the previous step on both sideburn areas. Focus on the middle of your client’s ear as the area that should be shaved the closest.
3. Using the Cordless Andis Master Clipper with lever set to the second notch and continue fading up - about an inch in height - to give subtle definition when the hair is outlined. Then, create two smaller sections with the blade set to the third and fifth notches, respectively.
4. To complement the head shape, use clipper-over-comb to blend at the parietal ridge with the blade in the closed position. Comb the hair against the growth stream and angle the comb away from the scalp to match the longest length of hair you desire to remain in the crown.
5. After applying a wrap lotion, blow dry and brush to mold the hair and improve the wave pattern, use the GTX-EXO to blend into the beard before outlining. Do this by first flicking south with the blade facing north. Then, below the previously trimmed area, flick the tool north while the blade is angled 45 degrees away from the skin.
6. Continue fading into the beard, and in the next subsection, flick the GTX-EXO north while the blade is angled away from the scalp at 90 degrees.
7. After the hair in the crown has dried, use a comb to isolate the thicker-than-desired areas and use the clipper-over-comb technique to remove some bulk.
8. Outline the entire outer perimeter with the GTX-EXO Trimmer. Make sure the comb and cutter blade are angled 90 degrees from the scalp and are only tapped down at the desired areas to be outlined.
9. Lastly, use the GTX-EXO to free-hand trim any loose hairs standing up in the crown area for a polished finish!
