Step-by-Step: Trevor Moots’ Classic Brush Back Taperfeaturing Wahl Professional
Classic cuts never go out of style, but giving them a modern twist is what sets a barber apart. In this step-by-step guide, Trevor Moots (@tailorfade), Wahl Professional Global Educator, demonstrates his signature Classic Brush Back Taper, showing how to refresh a timeless look with precision and style.
CREATE THE SECTIONS
1. Begin by lightly spraying the hair with water to dampen it.Pro Tip! Apply conditioner before sectioning to keep hair moisturized and make it easier to work with, especially textured hair.
2. Locate the recession points on both sides of the head and extend them up to the apex.
3. Comb the hair back in the direction of the sections. Place the spine of your comb against the side of the head. Where it naturally touches is where you will separate the side from the top. Repeat on the other side.
4. For the back section, place the spine of the comb against the back of the head. Where it naturally touches is where you’ll separate the top from the back.
5. Once all sections are defined, clip the top section out of the way.
REMOVE THE BULK
1. Section the sides of the head diagonally, lifting each section out. This diagonal back sectioning helps remove bulk from the sides.
2. Take the first diagonal section and brush the hair down. Trim with shears. Repeat this process along the sides and back of the head.
SHAPE THE TOP
1. Brush the top section backward. Take a vertical section about the width of the comb. Lift the hair up and cut in square layers.
2. After creating the center guideline, brush the hair to the right side. Take horizontal sections, lift them up and cut in square layers, connecting to the center guideline. Once the right side is complete, brush the hair to the left and repeat the same process.
BLOW DRY
Using the Wahl Vanquish Dryer, diffuse hair on low heat to avoid curls frizzing.
Pro Tip! Apply a forming product like American Crew’s Forming Cream to create a foundation for your blow dry, giving structure and texture for the final result. Use a light touch - don’t force the product or weigh the hair down. Let it move naturally.
TAPER
1. In the back, place the spine of the comb against the nape of the neck. Where it makes contact is where you will start the taper, cutting everything below that point. Repeat the same process for the sides of the head.
2. Using the Wahl Vapor Clipper, start the taper.
3. Set a diagonal guideline through the ear to the nape of the neck for the fade.
FADE
1. Using the Wahl Vapor Clipper, start with a #3, and work all the way down to a #1.5. Then, set the 0 in, balding it out with the Wahl Microshaver, and fade up from the 0 into the #1.5 using no guard open to close, half guard open to close and one guard open to close. Repeat the same steps on the sideburn area.
2. Using the Wahl Launch Trimmer, shape the ears and hairline.
