Tips for Diffusing Hair on Your Texture-Loving Clientsfeaturing Rusk
Featuring Rusk Educator David Chizek
As textured hair continues to take over, more and more clients are embracing their natural curls, waves and coils, and they look to you to show them how to maintain this texture at home. Give them this quick diffuser tutorial from Rusk Educator David Chizek before they leave your chair - they’ll love the added value, plus it’ll help show off your work between visits!
Step 1: Apply Rusk Designer Collection Thickr Thickening Myst to damp hair and comb through to distribute.
Step 2: Using the Rusk Speed Titanium Professional Dryer with the diffuser attachment on high heat, lift and scrunch hair, working until it’s 100% dry.
Step 3: As you work, use the end of a tail comb to gently lift at the root, creating extra volume and body. When it gets hot, use the cold shot button to help lock in the curl.
Step 4: Spray Rusk Designer Collection W8less Plus Extra Strong Hold Shaping & Control Hairspray all over. Pro tip: use the can to smooth flyaways at the crown!
Bonus! We asked David for his advice on diffusing a client, his top tips for diffusing at home, plus why he uses a diffuser behind the chair. Check it out!
Marlo Beauty: What are the benefits of diffusing a client?
David: By diffusing a client, I am able to enhance the beauty of the natural texture while locking in moisture and blocking out humidity! Diffusing also allows me the ability to set the curls. When a curly- or wavy-haired client asks for a polished natural look, I will always use a diffuser to enhance the natural texture of the hair.
Marlo Beauty: What hair types would you recommend diffusing?
David: The best textures to diffuse would be type 2B-3A. On hair types 3B+, or any hair type that is highly porous, you do not want to diffuse entirely, simply because these types tend to be dry already. Diffusing them to completion could create frizz or a dry, brittle feel to the hair
Marlo Beauty: How do you prevent frizz when diffusing?
David: Make sure to use plenty of product and keep your hands out of the hair.
Marlo Beauty: What tips do you give clients for diffusing their hair at home?
David: When I send my curly clients home with product, I like to remind them to always apply enough product and make sure to comb the product through evenly damp hair. I always remind them to keep their hands out of their curls while it's still damp!
